The Cycle the Erie Canal tour is an eight-day, fully-supported ride that starts in Buffalo and finishes in Albany. Each day cyclists travel approximately 40 miles along the historic Erie Canalway Trail. The tour is rich in scenery and history and designed to allow time for participants to stop and explore the towns and sites along the way. Whether checking out a museum or taking a boat ride through canal locks, there are always new things to do and see.
What better way, then, to celebrate the tour than through the experiences of those who have made it so memorable over the years. To do that, we reached out to past riders, volunteers and members of the communities the tour travels through and asked them to share their personal experiences and what the tour means to them.
For the eight days the tour would have occurred, Sunday, July 12 through Sunday, July 19, we held a virtual celebration. Each day we showcased daily route highlights along with memories, photographs and videos from the individuals and communities that make this event so extraordinary. To experience the virtual celebration, go to Virtual Celebration.
We could not have put together such a successful virtual event without the support and memories from the Cycle the Erie Canal community. A huge shout out and thank you to everyone who took the time to share, participate or just come along for the ride.
And a special, heartfelt thank you to those who supported our virtual ride through financial gifts this year. Not only is Cycle the Erie Canal one of Parks & Trails New York’s most beloved events, it is also an important fundraiser for the organization. We are grateful that so many who love Cycle the Erie Canal chose to donate to keep the ride going in 2021 and beyond, especially at a time when many individuals, communities, and non-profits are struggling during COVID-19. There’s still time to support the ride – please visit our website.
If you’ve never ridden the tour but think it sounds like fun sign up for info on future tours. Stay in the loop and don’t miss out – space is limited.
Thank you again from all of us at Parks & Trails New York for the past and future memories.
See you on the trail!
